Wild camp and hike through the majestic Groot Winterhoek Mountain Wilderness and swim in the largest, most dramatic mountain rock pool in the Western Cape, overlooked by a cave with ancient San rock art. Venture off-the-beaten-track and explore remote and hidden mountain valleys, inviting rock pools, fascinating rock formations and jaw dropping mountain scenery.

Groot Winterhoek Wilderness Reserve offers some of the best mountain hiking in the Boland region of South Africa. The 24 309 ha mountainous nature reserve incorporates not only striking rock formations, and one of the highest peaks in the Western Cape (+2000m ASL), but also remote and beautiful high elevation mountain valleys with wetlands draining into magnificent mountain streams and glorious large rock pools. These mountains are clad with the beautiful and highly biodiverse fynbos vegetation and animals like baboon, klipspringer and leopard roam side by side. It truly is a mountain getaway where one can experience deep revitalization - body and soul alike.

As Groot Winterhoek is a Wilderness Area, where one is allowed to camp literally anywhere, our overnight locations are not pre-determined, and our daily hiking distances therefore also not fixed.

The best overnight locations will be sought out along our route to ensure a beautiful hiking and wild-camping experience removed from the crowds. The hike will be on mountain footpaths for about 90% of the distance, and off-trail on moderate terrain for about 10% of the distance, allowing exploration of some truly beautiful but lesser known sections of the reserve.

• DIFFICULTY LEVEL - 2A - Intermediate to strenuous circular multi-day hike. Mostly on-trail, also some off-trail hiking. Wild-camping in tents, each to provide and carry their own gear, tents, clothing, cooking equipment and food.
