JONKERSHOEK SWARTBOSKLOOF
Leaving our vehicles at Witbrug, we hike along the gravel road to the start of the Swartboskloof Trail. We hike up the gradually ascending trail to our tea-break next to a small, forested stream. From here the path continues its gradual ascent up the magnificent Swartboskloof to a high mountain saddle, completely remote from civilization. We continue along a tiny stream, surrounded by dramatic mountain scenery, passing through exquisite fynbos vegetation to our lunch-break next to another stream. We follow the footpath to where it starts descending towards Kurktrekkersnek, enjoying views into Boegoekloof and across the peaks of Triplets and Somerset Sneeukop in the distance. After a short break, we head down the very steep and windy Kurktrekker footpath. The pace here is slow as the path is steep and degraded with loose rocks, so we tread carefully and rest often as we descend. Once at the bottom, we peer into the Tweede Waterval gorge and follow the trail back to Witbrug all along the edge of the beautiful Jonkershoek River, taking a swim in one of the rock pools if time and weather permits.
