SIMONSBERG PEAK BAG
Nothing beats the 360° view across the whole Boland and all its mountain ranges when one reaches the summit of Simonsberg, which is 1390m above sea level. Simonsberg stands out as a solitary mountain rising out high above the Boland vineyards by which it is completely surrounded. Named after Simon van der Stel, the founder of the town Stellenbosch. Visible all the way from the Cape Peninsula, it’s prominent shape reminds one of a large sleeping giant, perhaps Simon himself?
A jeep track leads one to the trail at the foot of the mountain. The fynbos is initially quite dense, but as the incline increases, it thins out as we hike along the steep rocky footpath. The path is well-maintained, but very steep and with loose rocks towards the end, and use of hands required in some short sections. The continuous steep gradient makes this a challenging hike, not recommended for beginners. The effort is well rewarded with spectacular, wide views and that ‘on-top-of-the-world’ feeling once we reach the summit. After the break we hike down the same way we came up.
