SANTIE GOUWS MOUNTAIN GUIDE

Exquisite Mountain & Fynbos Hiking Experiences

TWELVE APOSTLE TRAVERSE

Today we are in search of the shy Cape Klipspringer antelope (Oreotragus oreotragus, ssp oreotragus) that naturally occurs on the rocky outcrops all along the top and back of Table Mountain, usually in mating pairs that are known to bond for life. As such we will be traversing the Twelve Apostle mountains, all the way from Hout Bay to Camps Bay, and summit Judas Peak and Grootkop along the way.

Our hike takes us up the Back Table via the dramatic Llundudno Ravine which is surrounded by high, steep rock faces and offers striking views of the mountain dipping into the Atlantic ocean, as we ascend higher and higher. Once on top, we continue to summit Judas peak and enjoy the magnificent 360° views all the way to Hangklip, visible in the distance across False Bay, to Hout Bay and Kommetjie to the south, and Table Mountain and Devil’s Peak to the north, leaving us with that real ‘On top of the World’ feeling.

We continue our search along the spine of the Twelve Apostles to the top of Grootkop, where we enjoy a well-deserved lunch-break. From here we carry on northwards past unexpected rock crevaces and interesting rock formations, descending the mountain via the well-known Kasteelspoort trail to end the hike on Theresa Avenue, Camps Bay.
