SANTIE GOUWS MOUNTAIN GUIDE

This must be one of the most iconic sunset hikes on the planet, definitely in Cape Town. The walk starts off on a wide and steepish gravel road, which changes into a single-track rocky footpath that circumnavigates Lion’s Head as it leads all the way to the top. 

About a third of the way up, one reaches a short technical section where stainless steel staples are provided which to hold on to whilst scrambling ahead. From here the rocky path follows the steep ridge-line right to the top where guests can relax whilst taking in the magnificent views across the Twelve Apostles, Table Mountain and the City Bowl as the sun starts setting over the Atlantic Ocean. With the dramatic scene of the sun setting on the one side, and the city lights coming on to the other side, we head back down following the same path with which we ascended.

• DIFFICULTY LEVEL - 1.5B - Short, but very steep on-trail hike, exposure to heights and scrambling up rock staples using hands

• STANDARD-PACED HIKE - Up to 3.5 hours is the standard duration for this hike

• SLOW-PACED HIKE - Guests preferring a slower pace, can book a 4.5 hour hike
